Primal Spirit Vegan Jerky

I picked up a pack of Primal Spirit Vegan Jerky on Amazon after a friend mentioned them. The pack contained six different flavors of vegan jerky from the company, but I’m only reviewing five of them (I am not reviewing the Thai Peanut flavor).

They all come in the same tight packaging…which I hated. It was pretty hard to consistently open so there was a good opening for the jerky. That was a constant annoyance with eating them.

Another constant was the calorie to protein ratio. They were all around ~80 calories with 10g of protein, which is pretty great. They were not, however, all made the same way. Some were made primarily with soy protein, some with wheat protein, and one was made with Shiitake Mushrooms.

Anyway, here are my thoughts on each flavor I tried in vague order of most liked to least liked:

Texas BBQ

I think this one is my favorite. It had a good BBQ-ish flavor and a nice, slightly moist texture. It just tasted like good jerky to me.

Mesquite Lime

This one was pretty good. Sadly, there was only one in the pack, so I didn’t get to have it multiple times. I liked the lime flavor and the punch it brought. If I had it more times, it is possible I would put it above the Texas BBQ.

Hickory Smoked

Not bad. Good smokey flavor. I found it a bit forgettable, probably in comparison with the Texas BBQ.

Teriyaki

It was alright. Nothing that special, solid, but not my favorite. I wish it had a stronger flavor—that it did not made it disappointing in my eyes. I like the taste of Teriyaki sauce so…I just wanted more.

Hot & Spicy, Sweet and Savory

Neither that hot nor spicy, but it was sweet and somewhat savory. Texturally, it was a lot tougher, drier, grittier than the other flavors. This was the only one with Shitake Mushrooms as the primary ingredient, which is interesting. That is probably why the texture is so different. I wasn’t that fond of it from a flavor/texture standpoint.

Overall

I liked getting to try a variety of flavors of vegan jerky and their texture overall. The variety is nice. However, if I were to get this product again, I’d probably only get Texas BBQ or Mesquite Lime. I’m not sure if I’d get this again period, though. I wasn’t that in love with any of the flavors. I would recommend people to try it, maybe some of the flavors would appeal to people more than they did for me.
